MOGADISHU, Somalia – A heavy battle in the south of Mudug left the commander of the 18th battalion, Major Abdi Mohamed Sulnuug dead along with other SNA soldiers.

The fighting came after the government forces and the local clan militia attacked a place where the Al-Shabaab militants were gathering for planning an attack in Aad town.

The intense battle lasted for several hours, in which both sides used different types of weapons and caused various losses to both sides, according to the villagers.

The reports add that Commander Suulnug was initially injured, but later died of his injuries.

“We mourn the loss of Major Abdi Mohamed Sulnuuge, commander of the 18th GorGor battalion of the Somali National Army, who was martyred today in Mudug. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, the SNA, and all Somalis. May Allah grant him the highest level of Jannah,” said the defense ministry.

Sulnuug has recently been at the front lines of the war, being part of the siege of the Adan Yabal district and other areas in the Middle Shabelle, Galgaduud, and Mudug regions.

In the areas of southern Mudug, in the last few weeks, the operations against the Al-Shabaab have been going on intensively, and it is worth noting that the SNA took over many areas that were under the control of the group for a long time.
