MAHAS, Somalia – Gunfire broke out in the Mahaas district of the Hiran region between the SNA forces, from Ali Bin Abi Dhalib brigade and the local clan militia aka Ma’wisley.
The battle came after a national army soldier deliberately killed an innocent civilian, which prompted a face-to-face fighting between the two sides in the central Somali town.
The warring parties used different types of weapons, and it was confirmed that the clashes killed up to 3 people from both sides, while several others sustained a variety of wounds.
The latest reports indicate that the situation is calm and local authorities are trying to bring an end to the tension as an investigation has been launched into the matter.
The cessation of hostilities was spearheaded by the traditional elders of the district, MPs, and other officials from the Hiraan regional administration as well as the HirShabelle state.
Last month, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited the frontline town of Mahaas in the central Hiran region to remobilize government troops and local fighters.
Mohamud’s visit underscored his unwavering commitment to countering the extremist threat posed by al-Shabaab and to re-establish peace and stability across the nation.
