MOGADISHU, Somalia – A witness in Kahda, Wadijir and Dharkeenley districts within Mogadishu woke up early this morning to the sound of mortar shelling in some villages.

The mortar shelling’s impact was widely felt in other parts of the Benadir region and it is reported the attack to have caused losses of life and property. The number remains unclear.

Some of the areas hit by mortars include Tarabush neighborhood in the Wadajir district and other neighborhoods in Kahda and Dharkenleey. Al-Shabaab is blamed for the shelling.

It is not yet known the official damage caused by the artillery fire, but preliminary pictures that were circulated on social media showed the destruction of houses hit by mortar shells.

The security agencies of the Federal Government of Somalia did not issue a statement regarding the suspected Al-Shabaab early this morning.

The Al-Shabaab group often claims responsibility for the artillery attacks in Mogadishu, and other places in Somalia as it is fighting against the government forces and the AU forces.

Al-Shabaab was driven out of the capital in 2011 but it still capbabale of carrying out attacks due to the weakness of the security agencies which are infiltrated by militants.
