MOGADISHU, Somalia – Last night, an unmanned aircraft carried out an airstrike in the vicinity of the Galcad district in the Galgadud region, central Somalia.

The reports from the region further indicated that the drone attack targeted a place where members of the Al-Shabaab group were gathering to plot an attack.

In a statement, the government said heavy losses were inflicted on the members of the Al-Shabaab who were at the scene of the strike. No independent sources verified the claims.

The statement said another operation took place last night in the Lower Shabelle region, targeting Al-Shabaab, and the bases belonging to the group were destroyed in the raid.

“In the Lower Shabelle region, the army also destroyed enemy bases in that region. There are many losses to Al-Shabaab in the operations carried out last night in the two regions,” said the statement issued by the government.

The Somali government forces, with the support of international partners, have recently been conducting air and ground operations in some areas where Al-Shabaab is located.
