Somali army conducts anti-al-Shabaab offensive near Guriel

MOGADISHU [SMN] – The Somali National Army (SNA) has this morning carried out a planned operation on the outskirts of the town of Guriel in the Galgadud region, killing members of Al-Shabaab who were planning a bomb attack, according to the SNA.

Reports say that government forces in collaboration with Galmudug forces attacked a place where members of Al-Shabaab were staying, there were clashes between the two sides which resulted in various casualties.

Commander of the Armed Forces Odowan Yusuf Rage who spoke on the operation said that seven members were killed including an al-Shabaab official in Guri El, according to the statement.

He also pointed out that the troops had seized a vehicle carrying explosives and explosive vests which he said were intended to attack Guriel.

The situation is still tense and troops are currently conducting operations in areas under the control of Guriel town in the Galgadud region.
