ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – The president of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud today attended the opening of the African Union Leaders Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

During his address to the meeting, the President called for collective steps to be taken to establish effective mechanisms for addressing the emerging peace and security crises across the continent.

The President denounced Ethiopia’s recent actions, specifically the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Somaliland, a region within Somalia, to gain access to the sea.

He characterized this move as an annexation of another country’s territory, which he deemed “unconstitutional, illegal, and unacceptable.

This year’s theme of the African Union Leaders Summit is “Educate and Skill Africa for the 21st Century”.

Apart from African leaders, representatives from other major international organizations including BRICS have arrived in Addis Ababa. Brazilian President, Lula da Silva arrived in Addis Ababa on Thursday night.
