GAROWE, Somalia – The president of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud touched down on Thursday morning in Garowe to attend the inauguration of the re-elected Puntland leader.
The president was accorded a cordial welcome upon his arrival in the city from President Deni and other officials from Puntland state as well as lawmakers, ministers, and elders.
The inauguration ceremony of President Said Abdullahi Deni drew the attention as the list of the attendance is full of people from across the country and abroad, including ex-PMs.
The inaugural ceremony also presents an opportunity for dialogue, fostering relationships, and strengthening partnerships between various political actors at both the national and regional levels.
Deni was re-elected on the 8th of this month by Puntland lawmakers in an indirect election in Garowe following months of gridlock over the electoral process that led to street clashes.
The historic re-election of Said Deni raised eyebrows in Villa Somalia as the relations between Puntland leader and president of the Federal government Hassan Sheikh is at a point.
The fallout started after Hassan Sheikh’s election in May 2022 which Deni lost to win the top job in Somalia. Puntland wanted to get the post of the Somali PM but failed to win.
