Somali Security forces foil car bomb attacks in Dhusamareb city

DHUSAMAREB, Somalia – Somali Security forces successfully thwarted twin car bomb attacks on the outskirts of Dhusamareb district in the Galgadud region on Thursday morning.

The two blasts happened near the city’s airport and at a security checkpoint after the soldiers shot dead the drivers of the two vehicles packed with explosives before reaching their target.

Speaking to Radio Shabelle over the phone, several Security officials in the city said they had prior information about the car bombs, which enabled them to prevent the planned attacks.

Reports indicate that the troops were vigilant and on high alert at the time of the attempted attacks. So far, the group said it was behind the foiled car bombings but it bore all the hallmarks of Al-Shabaab attacks in Somalia.

“The vigilant troops neutralized the drivers of two explosives-laden vehicles before they could enter the town,” the state media reported.

This incident took place as President Hassan Sheikh was leading a military campaign in the central district, where he had been working temporarily for months to oversee operations aimed at eliminating the Shabab group.

In August 2022, Mohamud launched a “total war” against al-Shabaab. In the first phase, Somali forces concentrated on the central regions of Hirshabelle and Galmudug, supporting local clans that were rebelling against al-Shabaab.
