KISMAYO, Somalia – Somalia’s federal government announced Saturday that elite Danab commandos carried out a targeted operation in the Harboole area of Lower Juba region, killing senior Al-Shabaab operatives long sought by Somali and regional security forces.
In an official statement, the government said the operation was aimed at high-ranking members of the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group involved in terrorist attacks and kidnappings inside Somalia and in neighboring countries.
“These individuals had been on the wanted list for years due to their direct involvement in planning and executing terror operations,” the statement read.
During the raid, Somali forces also seized weapons and military equipment that Al-Shabaab had been using to target civilians, according to the statement.
The operation was jointly conducted by the U.S.-trained Danab special forces and the Jubbaland regional paramilitary unit, known as the Daraawiish. Jubbaland officials confirmed their participation and hailed the mission as a success.
The Somali government reiterated its commitment to intensifying counter-terrorism operations and declared that the fight against Al-Shabaab remains a top national priority.
The militant group Al-Shabaab continues to pose a serious threat to stability in Somalia, despite ongoing offensives by Somali forces and their international partners.
