Somalia and Turkey strengthen cooperation in fisheries and blue economy

Mogadishu, November 15, 2025 – Somalia’s Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Ahmed Hassan Aden, met on Saturday with Turkey’s Ambassador to Somalia, Alper Aktaş, in Mogadishu to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation in fisheries and the country’s blue economy.

 

The meeting focused on improving fisheries development, safeguarding marine resources, and accelerating the implementation of existing cooperation agreements between Somalia’s Ministry of Fisheries and the Turkish government.

Turkey pledged advanced training programs for Somali fishermen, as well as support for university-level education, including Master’s degrees, to develop Somali experts in blue economy and marine resource management.

Minister Aden thanked the Turkish government for its ongoing technical support and cooperation, describing the meeting as “successful and important for strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in fisheries, a key pillar of Somalia’s economy.”

Ambassador Aktaş reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to supporting Somalia through training, education, and marine resource development programs, emphasizing Ankara’s readiness to further expand cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting underscores growing efforts by Somalia and Turkey to strengthen ties in blue economy initiatives and sustainable marine resource management.
