MOGADISHU, Somalia — The head of Somalia’s National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mahmoud Moallin Abdulle, has met with George Conway, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, to discuss efforts to reduce the impact of flooding.
The meeting, attended by South West State’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, focused on strengthening cooperation between SoDMA, humanitarian organizations, the federal government and member states to protect vulnerable communities and improve flood preparedness.
The officials stressed the importance of coordinated action and early measures to reduce the humanitarian impact of flooding, particularly in communities exposed to recurring climate-related disasters.
Discussions also focused on Early Action and Anticipatory Action, which aim to enable authorities and humanitarian organizations to prepare and respond before floods occur, helping limit damage and protect vulnerable populations.
SoDMA Chairman Mahmoud Moallin Abdulle said stronger coordination and collective action were needed to address anticipated risks and ensure timely responses to emerging threats.
He called for greater unity among government institutions and humanitarian partners, stressing that coordinated and rapid action would be essential to reducing the effects of foreseeable disasters in Somalia.
