CAIRO – Somalia’s ambassador to Egypt and permanent representative to the Arab League, Ali Abdi Awaare, attended a luncheon held in honour of Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit and his deputy Hossam Zaki, whose terms are set to end on June 30, 2026.

The event, organised by Arab ambassadors accredited to Egypt and the Arab League, paid tribute to the two officials for their decade-long leadership of the organisation. They were awarded medals and high-level honours in recognition of their contributions to strengthening the Arab League’s work.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Awaare highlighted the longstanding historical ties between Somalia and Egypt, noting that the wife of the Secretary-General, Mrs Laila Kamal El-Din Saleh, is the daughter of former Egyptian ambassador to Somalia Kamal El-Din Saleh, who served from 1954 to 1957.

The Somali envoy recalled that Ambassador Saleh was killed in Somalia on April 16, 1957, while playing a prominent role in supporting Somalia’s independence movement, an event still remembered in Somalia today.

Ambassador Awaare stressed that the Somali people continue to value Egypt’s historic support during the struggle for independence and the early years of state-building, reaffirming the close fraternal relations between the two countries.
