MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, on Sunday received a copy of the credentials of Oman’s newly appointed ambassador to Somalia, Salim bin Habib Al-Umayri.

The minister welcomed the new ambassador during a meeting in Mogadishu and pledged the ministry’s full support in helping him carry out his diplomatic duties.

Abdi Ali also congratulated the ambassador on the reopening of Oman’s embassy in Mogadishu, 36 years after the Gulf nation ceased operating an embassy in the Somali capital.

The minister described the development as a clear indication of Oman’s strong confidence in Somalia and its commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations between the two countries.

He also thanked the Omani government for its continued support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.

The reopening of the embassy comes as Somalia seeks to strengthen its diplomatic ties with Arab countries and expand cooperation with regional and international partners.

Somalia and Oman share longstanding historical ties, shaped in part by trade, cultural exchanges and connections across the Indian Ocean. The restoration of Oman’s diplomatic presence in Mogadishu is expected to provide further opportunities for engagement in political, economic and regional affairs.

The appointment of the new ambassador and the reopening of the embassy mark a new chapter in diplomatic engagement between the two countries, although further details on planned bilateral cooperation were not provided in the announcement.
