MOGADISHU, Somalia — The chairwoman of Somalia’s National Independent Human Rights Commission, Maryan Qasim, has met the country’s Auditor General, Ahmed Isse Guutaale, to discuss strengthening cooperation between the two institutions, the commission said.
The meeting focused on supporting the newly established human rights body as it develops its administrative and financial systems.
The two officials discussed staffing arrangements and procedures aimed at strengthening accountability, transparency and the efficient management of public assets and funds.
Qasim and the Auditor General stressed the importance of establishing effective administrative and financial systems for the commission while fully safeguarding its constitutional and legal independence.
They also discussed the need for the commission to comply with Somalia’s financial laws and procedures without undermining its independence or the mandate granted to it under the constitution and other legislation.
The meeting also covered cooperation on improving staff skills and professional capacity, as well as preparations for financial audits to ensure the commission’s operations are managed in line with principles of good governance and accountability.
The talks form part of broader efforts to strengthen Somalia’s public institutions and promote transparent, efficient and accountable management of public resources.
