MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Thursday inspected the headquarters of the army’s 1st Gorgor Commando Division, where he reviewed newly trained troops and military preparations, the presidency said.
Mohamud, who also serves as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, received briefings from commanders and senior officers during the visit. He toured offices, troop facilities, the division’s hospital and logistics centres to assess the condition of the forces, their access to services and their readiness for national duties.
The president highlighted Türkiye’s support for strengthening Somalia’s military capabilities, including the training and development of the Somali National Army.
“Our Turkish brothers want nothing from us other than for us to succeed,” Mohamud said, according to the presidency.
The Gorgor commandos, part of the Somali army’s elite forces, have received specialised training as Mogadishu seeks to strengthen its military capacity and increase the role of Somali forces in security operations.
Mohamud praised the Gorgor units for their role in defending the country and fighting Al-Shabaab, urging the troops to remain prepared to fulfil their constitutional responsibilities.
He called on the forces to work towards what he described as the Somali people’s goal of liberating the country from Al-Shabaab.
The president also thanked the government and people of Türkiye for their continued support for the rebuilding, training and development of the Somali National Army, particularly efforts to establish and strengthen specialised units such as the Gorgor commandos.
