MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have signed a two-year cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening the country’s capacity to prepare for and respond to disasters.
SoDMA Chairman Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle and WFP Somalia Representative Hameed Nuru signed the agreement, which focuses on improving risk forecasting, preparedness, early warning systems, anticipatory action and emergency response.
The partnership will also support efforts to strengthen Somalia’s disaster risk management systems, food security, humanitarian assistance and community resilience, with the aim of reducing the impact of disasters and protecting lives and livelihoods.
Nuru said the agreement would deepen cooperation between WFP and SoDMA and contribute to building a disaster management system capable of responding quickly to humanitarian risks and the effects of climate change.
Abdulle said the partnership was important for strengthening national preparedness and the capacity of Somali institutions to respond to disasters, with a particular focus on early warning and anticipatory action.
He thanked WFP for its continued support to Somalia, saying closer cooperation was essential to improving the country’s ability to prepare for and respond to emergencies.
