MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s House of the People Speaker, Abdikadir Mohamed Nur Jama, has urged a parliamentary committee to speed up its legislative work and strengthen oversight of government institutions responsible for internal affairs, regional administrations, security and immigration.

Jama met with the House Committee on Internal Affairs, Regional Administrations and Security to discuss ways to improve the committee’s performance and accelerate the fulfillment of its parliamentary responsibilities.

The meeting focused on legislation, oversight and accountability, including the committee’s role in monitoring government agencies responsible for internal security and immigration affairs.

Discussions also covered the need to strengthen transparency, accountability and good governance to improve the committee’s work and ensure it fulfills its constitutional mandate.

Jama urged committee members to expedite the completion of draft legislation under their consideration and submit the bills to the House of the People for further proceedings.

He also called on the committee to align its working procedures with recently introduced efforts to modernize and improve the operations of the lower house of Somalia’s federal parliament.

The meeting comes as parliament continues its legislative and oversight responsibilities in areas central to domestic governance and national security.

The House of the People is the lower chamber of Somalia’s Federal Parliament, which shares legislative responsibilities with the Upper House.
