KAMPALA, Uganda — Somalia’s Speaker of the House of the People, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madoobe), on Friday attended the 20th summit of speakers of parliaments of the East African Community (EAC) in Kampala, officials said.
The annual gathering — hosted this year by the Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament — focused on reviewing decisions from the previous summit, examining outcomes from the meeting of clerks of EAC parliaments, and assessing draft regional legislative instruments tabled by the community’s parliamentary committee.
In a speech to delegates, Sheikh Adan Madoobe thanked the Ugandan parliament and the EAC’s legislative leadership for organising the summit, describing the forum as “timely” amid renewed efforts by member states to strengthen peace, integration and the region’s shared development agenda.
He said Somalia remained committed to contributing actively to the bloc since formally joining the EAC, and would continue to play “a meaningful role” in supporting regional cooperation and stability.
Madoobe also briefed fellow speakers on Somalia’s recent election of nine legislators to represent the country in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) — a step he said underscored Mogadishu’s “full return to regional participation” and its ambition to deepen parliamentary diplomacy and joint development efforts within the community.
