Suicide explosion hits outside Somali capital; many feared dead

MOGADISHU, Somalia – A large suicide bombing, which was used in a vehicle filled with explosives, took place in the Elasha Biyaha area located on the outskirts of Mogadishu.

 

The explosion targeted a military police station and caused deaths and wounds but the number was not known. The residents remained indoors following the devastating blast.

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that they killed 49 army soldiers inside the base. However, there is no independent information that confirms such claims.

Pictures taken from the scene of the explosion show heavy damage to civilian houses which were caused by the explosion. The morning attack comes amid a military operation.

The security agencies of the government have not yet spoken about this explosion, and it coincided with al-Shabaab increasing suicide bombings targeting military positions.
