NEW YORK – The UN Security Council has condemned the recent twin attacks in Mogadishu and Beletweyne which killed over 50 people and urged Somali leaders to unite against terrorism amid a fallout between the Prime Minister and the President.
The Council also said those behind the attacks must be held accountable while reiterating the need for member states to collaborate with Somalia in fighting the scourge of terror.
They (Council Members) urged Somalia’s leaders to work together on critical national issues, including the conclusion of the ongoing electoral process, the fight against terrorism and responding to the grave humanitarian crisis developing in Somalia,” the statement read in part.
The remarks follow the attacks at the Halane base camp bordering Ade Adde airport and in Beletweyne. At least six people were killed in Mogadishu while 48 died in twin bombings in Beletweyne while 108 others were injured.
Differences between President Mohamed Farmaajo and Prime Minister Mohamed Roble has been cited as a reason for increased Al-Shabaab attacks.
The row has resulted in a disconnect in intelligence sharing and coordination of security forces.
