Benadir regional court acquits 7, send 5 to jail over corruption

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Benadir regional court today made a final decision on serious cases of corruption, negligence of responsibility, falsification of documents, and misuse of public funds.

 

The suspects who were arrested a few months ago were from the Ministries of Finance and Labour, the Central Bank, and the Immigration Agency. The televised hearing went on for a month.

According to the verdict, five have been jailed, while 7 acquitted in major graft cases.

1 – Abdullahi Mohamud Cosoble, who was the director of the foreign department of the Immigration Agency, was sentenced to 1 year in prison.

2 – Omar Maallin Noor, the deputy director of the foreign affairs department of the Immigration and Nationality Agency was also sentenced to 1 year in prison.

3 – Sabir Hassan Abdinur, head of visa extension checks at the Immigration Department’s foreign affairs department, was sentenced to three years and six months in prison.

4 – Aden Mohamed Abdi, the director of visa processing at the Immigration and Nationality Agency’s visa extension department, was acquitted of all the charges brought against him, and the court restored his freedom.

5 – Abdirahman Abdikarin Ibrahim, who is absent, and who is the head of the foreign licensing department of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, has been sentenced to a total of 9 years in prison, and has also been suspended from holding public office permanently.

6 – Abdiwahid Mursal Ibrahim, who is absent, and who is an employee of the foreigner licensing department of the legal department of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, was acquitted of all the charges against him, and the court restored his freedom.

7 – Abdullahi Mohamed Ali, the former director of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, was also acquitted of the charges, and the court restored his freedom.

8 – Mohamed Adde Mukhtar Abdirahman, the former director general of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, was also acquitted of the charges, and the court restored his freedom.

9 – Abukar Mohamed Ali, who was the manager of the eastern tax office of the Ministry of Finance, Aden Adde airport branch, was sentenced to a total of 8 years in prison and was also suspended from holding a government job.

10 – Abduqadir Abdi Sodal, who was also the cashier of the foreign revenue department of the Central Bank, in his Aden Adde airport branch, was acquitted of all the charges he was accused of, and the court restored his freedom.

11 – Mohamed Aden Abdullahi, who is the manager of the Central Bank, Aden Adde airport branch was sentenced to 8 months in prison.
