MOGADISHU, Somalia – In a significant move to curb illicit arms trade and enhance national security, Somalia has imposed a total ban on the trade, smuggling, and other transactions related to weapons and ammunition within the country by non-state actors.
The decision was made on Thursday following an extraordinary meeting of the National Security Council, chaired by President Hassan Sheikh which addressed the recent seizure of illicit weapons by armed militias in Abudwak town under Galmudug state this week.
The National Security Council issued several directives to strengthen oversight and accountability in weapons and ammunition management. The prime minister, military chiefs, intelligence, and police attended the conference.
