MADRID, Spain — The Spanish government has approved a €1 million grant to support the African Union Mission in Support of Somalia (AUSSOM), officials announced following a cabinet meeting.
Madrid said the funding is critical as instability in Somalia poses risks to the wider Horn of Africa and could be linked to challenges in the Sahel region, an area of strategic importance for Spain under its Spain–Africa 2025–2028 strategy.
Spanish officials noted that AUSSOM is currently facing financial constraints, and the new support will help prevent potential operational disruptions that could weaken the mission’s effectiveness.
According to La Moncloa, the grant will contribute to strengthening African security frameworks, accelerating the establishment of a unified and stable Somali government, and ensuring AUSSOM can continue its operations amid ongoing security challenges.
The Somalia grant is part of broader international support measures. The cabinet also approved new contributions to United Nations agencies and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to fund global development programs.
