BAIDOA, Somalia – Several mortar rounds struck near Shaati Gaduud airport in Baidoa on Friday as Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in the southwestern city, triggering a security scare, officials and witnesses said.
The shells landed in the vicinity of the airport, causing panic, though there was no immediate official confirmation of casualties.
The president had been expected to briefly address officials and residents gathered to welcome him, but he was swiftly escorted to the presidential compound following the incident.
Security at the compound is partly maintained by troops from Ethiopia, who are involved in stabilization efforts in the city, according to local sources.
Mohamud’s visit to Baidoa is aimed at accelerating social service delivery, strengthening peace and reconciliation efforts, supporting the democratization process, responding to drought conditions and promoting state-building in Somalia.
During his stay, the president is expected to hold meetings with leaders of the South West State, traditional elders, security officials and civil society representatives.
The talks will focus on improving security, expanding government services and advancing plans for one-person, one-vote elections.
