Mogadishu — Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency said its forces, working with international partners, carried out planned operations in the Lower Shabelle region that killed nine Islamist militants and destroyed bomb-making equipment.

In the first operation, conducted in the area of Kuunyo Barrow, intelligence forces targeted a site used by fighters from the group the government refers to as “Khawarij”, commonly used by officials to describe Al-Shabaab.

Six militants were killed and six large engines allegedly used for manufacturing improvised explosive devices were destroyed, the agency said.

Among those killed were a figure identified as Abiikar Nur, described as responsible for engines and vehicles, and Abdifitah Mohamed Hassan, whom authorities said was a key mechanic involved in preparing car bombs.

A second operation in the wooded area of Tugaareey targeted militants sheltering in forested terrain, killing three and dispersing others, according to the statement.

The operations form part of ongoing efforts by Somali security forces to dismantle militant infrastructure and prevent planned attacks, the agency said. Security officials added that operations would continue to disrupt the group’s activities in the region.
