MOGADISHU, May 15, 2026 — The European Union expressed optimism on Friday over ongoing political dialogue in Somalia despite the collapse of talks between the federal government and opposition leaders over the country’s electoral framework and broader political disputes.
Francesco Di Mauro, the EU ambassador to Somalia, said in a post on X that the Horn of Africa nation was entering a “new political phase” and stressed the importance of continued negotiations.
“On this Youth Day, Somalia is entering a new political phase,” the envoy said. “The talks aim to agree on the direction of the elections: a genuinely inclusive process reflecting the voices of women and youth. I hope a joint communiqué with a clear roadmap for a peaceful transition will be issued later today.”
The ambassador’s remarks came as Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud reiterated during a Youth Day event in Mogadishu that his government would not abandon plans to implement one-person, one-vote elections.
The government’s push for direct elections has emerged as one of the main points of contention in the discussions with opposition groups, who are demanding an inclusive electoral model based on broad political consensus.
The meetings in Mogadishu have brought together senior figures from both the government and the opposition, while international partners continue efforts to broker a political agreement aimed at easing tensions surrounding Somalia’s electoral process.
