Former Somali PM Accuses Government of Politicizing Security Forces

MOGADISHU – Former Somali prime minister Hassan Ali Khaire on Thursday sharply criticized the federal government over the country’s escalating political tensions, accusing it of using the national armed forces for political purposes.

Khaire said it was regrettable that the security forces, established to defend the country and protect civilians, were being used for objectives beyond their constitutional and professional duties.

“It is deeply concerning that national forces meant to safeguard the people and the state are being drawn into political matters,” he said, warning that such actions risk undermining public trust in state institutions.

He also accused the government of targeting politicians and members of the public who hold differing political views, describing the move as harmful to democratic governance and freedom of expression.

According to Khaire, suppressing dissent and using state institutions against political opponents could deepen instability at a time when Somalia faces major security and electoral challenges.

The remarks come amid heightened political debate in Mogadishu over the country’s electoral process and growing tensions between the federal government and opposition figures ahead of key political transitions.
