Puntland boycotted NCC communique, warns potential risks

GAROWE (SMN) – The President of Puntland Said Abdullahi Deni has opposed the communique of the meeting of the National Consultative Council that took place in Mogadishu.

On Tuesday, Deni said that the leaders of the NCC reached a deal touching national elections without a broader consultation with all concerned sides, warning of potential risks against Somalia’s state-building efforts.

“Puntland was not part of the NCC communique, and it will not abide by it. We ignored the previous deals and did not sign, if we are separated, we will never produce any fruitful agreements” added Deni.

He also said: “The government structure that is being discussed now is a dangerous issue. In this 60-year free society, there should not have been any misunderstanding on the way to distribute or exercise the powers of the government.” In any case, from the meeting held in Djibouti 2000, until the last one in Embegaati, Kenya, Somalis agreed on a parliamentary system with a president and a prime minister, but there is no reason to change it.”

The regional leader said that the powers of the Prime Minister’s office have already been taken by President Hassan Sheikh, and destroyed, which is an unconstitutional matter that is dangerous for Somalia.

The President of Puntland said again that his regional state will act independently until Somalia gets a government that implements all the agreements and laws of the country.

The cooperation and relations between Villa Somalia and Puntland have been at a low point since Deni lost in the 2022 presidential election to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
