DHUSAMAREB, Somalia — Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre marked the 66th anniversary of the June 26, 1960 independence of Somalia’s northern regions, urging citizens to safeguard national unity, peace and statehood.

Speaking at a commemorative event in the central town of Dhusamareb, the prime minister congratulated Somalis at home and abroad, describing June 26 as a defining moment in the country’s history that symbolizes the struggle for independence, unity and self-determination.

Hamza said the sacrifices made by those who fought for Somalia’s freedom placed a responsibility on today’s generation to preserve the country’s unity, strengthen peace and promote stability and development.

“Tonight holds special significance in the memory of the Somali people,” the prime minister said. “It is a time to remember the heroes who gave their lives so our nation could achieve freedom and dignity. We have a responsibility to protect our unity and statehood so future generations can live in a peaceful and prosperous Somalia.”

He also called on Somalis to reinforce national solidarity, defend the country’s sovereignty and support efforts to build a secure and stable nation.

During the event, Hamza thanked Ahmed Abdi Karie, the president of Galmudug state, praising his leadership and his role in preparations for planned one-person, one-vote elections in the regional state.

Following the ceremony, the prime minister reviewed a guard of honor formed by units of the Somali National Army responsible for the national flag ceremony.
