MOGADISHU, Somalia — The chairwoman of Somalia’s National Independent Human Rights Commission, Dr Maryan Qasim, received UNDP Somalia’s new Resident Representative, Christophoros Politis, and his delegation in Mogadishu, with the two sides discussing ways to strengthen cooperation between the institutions.
The meeting focused on institutional development, capacity building, accountability and transparency, according to the commission.
The officials also discussed strengthening human rights monitoring mechanisms, preparing reports and improving systems for handling complaints submitted to the commission.
Politis reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to supporting the National Independent Human Rights Commission in developing into a strong and independent institution capable of effectively serving the Somali public.
The meeting was attended by members of the commission, its director general and advisers.
Both sides agreed to pursue long-term cooperation aimed at strengthening the commission’s institutional capacity and supporting it in carrying out its constitutional mandate.
The discussions come as Somalia works to strengthen national institutions responsible for protecting human rights and promoting accountability and transparency.
