MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has submitted an agreement on mining cooperation and development to the Federal Parliament’s House of the People for constitutional review and approval.
The ministry was represented by Deputy Minister Abdihakim Aadan Cananuug, who presented the agreement to lawmakers as part of the constitutional process for approving international agreements entered into by Somalia.
During the parliamentary session, lawmakers gave a first reading to the Charter establishing the African Mining Strategy Group and an agreement on cooperation in the development of critical minerals.
The agreement is part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between Somalia and other African countries in the mining sector, including technical and knowledge exchange and efforts to expand investment opportunities.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said it was prioritising international and African cooperation in the management and development of natural resources, in line with Somali law and national interests.
The ministry is also working to strengthen the legal and institutional framework governing the mining sector, with the stated aim of promoting transparent management, responsible investment and sustainable exploitation of Somalia’s mineral resources.
Cooperation between the ministry and the Federal Parliament is expected to play a key role in developing legislation and approving agreements underpinning the growth of Somalia’s mining sector and the management of its natural resources.
The parliamentary review comes as Somalia seeks to develop its largely untapped mineral resources and attract investment while establishing stronger regulatory and institutional safeguards for the sector.
