ROME, Italy – The Speaker of the Lower House Sheikh Adan Mohamed Noor (Madobobe) met with his Italian counterpart Lorenzo Fonta in Rome, Italy’s capital on Tuesday.

The two speakers discussed bilateral ties between their countries and cooperation between the two Parliaments to enhance the traditional relationship that Somalia has had with Italy.

Lorenzo Fonta praised Somalia’s ongoing progress and assured that the Italian Government will be supporting the efforts to remove Al-Shabaab from the entire Horn of Africa country.

The top agenda of the talks included security issues, which Somalia has been dealing with for the past three decades due to the collapse of the former military regime in early 1991.

Madoobe invited his counterpart to come to Somalia for a visit to see the progress and the works of the Federal Parliament and he accepted the invitation, according to a statement.

Italy, which is a key EU country is cooperating with Somalia in the field of Defence and Security, with the signing of a treaty between the two nations in Rome this year.

Italy is engaged in the training of the Somali Police to provide a contribution to the control capabilities of the Somali territory and the restoration of security conditions in the country.

The Italian embassy in Mogadishu is one of 18 foreign representations in Somalia and one of 17 foreign representations re-established after the country formed a Federal government in 2012.
