MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has submitted a mining cooperation and development agreement to the Federal Parliament’s House of the People as part of the constitutional process for approving international agreements.
Deputy Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Abdiyahab Aadan Cananuug represented the ministry before lawmakers and presented the agreement for consideration.
The House of the People subsequently gave a first reading to the Charter establishing the African Mining Strategy Group and cooperation on the development of critical minerals.
The agreement is intended to strengthen cooperation between Somalia and other African countries in the mining sector, including technical and knowledge-sharing initiatives and efforts to expand investment opportunities.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said it was prioritising both international and African cooperation on natural resources while ensuring that such efforts comply with Somali law and serve the national interest.
The ministry is also seeking to strengthen Somalia’s legal and institutional framework for the mining sector, with the aim of promoting transparent governance, responsible investment and sustainable development of the country’s mineral resources.
Cooperation between the ministry and parliament is expected to support the development of legislation and agreements governing the mining sector and the management of Somalia’s natural resources.
The parliamentary review comes as Somalia seeks to develop its mineral sector and attract investment while establishing stronger legal and institutional mechanisms for managing the country’s natural resources.
