Somalia Senate Speaker chairs committee meeting on oversight and accountability

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s Senate Speaker Abdi Hashi Abdullahi on Wednesday chaired the second meeting of the Standing Committee of the Upper House during its eighth session, with discussions focusing on parliamentary priorities, oversight and accountability.

The meeting reviewed ways to accelerate priority agendas for Senate sessions, organise committee proceedings and strengthen oversight of government institutions and the fulfilment of their responsibilities. Second Deputy Speaker Abdullahi Ali Hirsi, known as Timacadde, also attended the meeting.

Senate committee chairs presented recommendations on oversight and accountability procedures and ways to strengthen the committees’ role in carrying out their constitutional duties.

Speaker Abdi Hashi stressed the importance of implementing practical recommendations put forward by committee members and accelerating oversight and accountability activities.

He also emphasised the need for senators to observe working hours and attend parliamentary sessions regularly, saying discipline and commitment were essential to ensuring that their mandated responsibilities were carried out efficiently and responsibly.
