MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Minister of Interior Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, called for bold and firm support shown to the country’s armed forces in the operations against Al-Shabaab.

Fiqi said that the federal and regional leaders are committed to winning the war, which he said is in its final stage after the army captured half of the territory that Al-Shabaab ruled.

The Minister went to the front of the war to encourage the SNA and local clan forces, known as Ma’wisley, who achieved significant success in the areas they jointly attacked.

The government is waging ideological and economic wars that have brought about a significant change in the war on Al-Shabaab, according to the interior minister of Somalia.

The Minister said that the Al-Shabaab insurgency has been diminished since the President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud moved to Dhusamareb to coordinate the operation three months ago.

Last week, the Somali government reported that 1,650 militants were killed and 550 others were injured following military operations in the central Hirshabelle and Galmudug states.

In the same statement, the government claimed that 19 al-Shabab commanders were among those killed, one was injured and three have surrendered to government forces.
