MOGADISHU — Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), working with other security forces, has arrested a man accused of carrying out a grenade attack on a security checkpoint in Mogadishu’s Wadajir district, the agency said.
The suspect, identified as Abdissalaan Yacquub Nur, also known as Abdissamad, was arrested following an attack shortly after sunset prayers on Monday at a checkpoint in the Hawl-Wadaag area of Wadajir district, according to NISA.
The attack wounded three civilians and one security officer, the agency said.
NISA said security forces apprehended the suspect during a swift operation. Investigators also obtained footage from closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, which the agency said forms part of the ongoing investigation.
According to preliminary information released by NISA, the suspect is believed to have been part of a network involved in organizing attacks aimed at undermining security. The agency alleged that he had conducted reconnaissance on security locations in Mogadishu and helped transport grenades.
NISA said it was investigating the suspect’s alleged role in at least 10 grenade attacks across the capital. The incidents reportedly occurred in the districts of Kaxda, Garasbaaley, Dayniile, Daarusalaam, Wadajir, Hodan, Kaaraan and Heliwaa.
Those attacks left 12 people, including civilians and security personnel, wounded, according to the agency.
The allegations have not been independently verified, and the suspect’s arrest does not establish his guilt.
