ADDIS ABABA — The African Union on Wednesday reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the peacekeeping mission in Somalia, known as AUSSOM, following high-level talks at its headquarters in Addis Ababa.
The Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, speaking on behalf of Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, received Uganda’s Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja during the meeting.
Discussions focused on strengthening continental peace efforts, with particular emphasis on the role of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), which the AU described as central to maintaining security and stability in the country.
The AU official also expressed appreciation to Uganda, led by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, for its continued contribution to the mission, highlighting the sacrifices of Ugandan troops serving under the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) in Somalia.
The African Union stressed that it would continue mobilising the necessary resources and support to ensure AUSSOM achieves its objectives of peacebuilding and stabilisation in Somalia.
Uganda remains one of the largest troop-contributing countries to AU peace operations in Somalia, where regional forces have been deployed for years to support Somali security institutions in their fight against Islamist insurgents.
