NAIROBI — Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) said Tuesday they had killed five Al-Shabaab militants during a special operation in the dense Boni Forest, near the border with Somalia.
The operation, conducted in the Lacta Mangai area, is part of the long-running “Operation Amani Boni”, aimed at flushing out Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab fighters believed to be hiding in the forest, which stretches across the coastal Lamu region.
According to a KDF statement, troops recovered several weapons and supplies during the raid, including AK-47 rifles, hand grenades, ammunition, solar-powered equipment, tents, and materials used to manufacture improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The military said several other militants were wounded in the fighting but managed to flee the scene. A pursuit is underway to track them down.
Kenya has faced frequent attacks from Al-Shabaab, particularly in regions near the Somali border. The group has targeted civilians and security forces, prompting Kenya to intensify its counterterrorism operations both domestically and in support of Somali government forces across the border.
