MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Friday called for greater national unity and warned against political divisions as the country concluded celebrations marking Independence and Unity Week.
Speaking at the closing ceremony in Mogadishu, Barre praised Somalis for what he described as a remarkable nationwide commemoration of the country’s national days, saying the celebrations sent a message of unity, solidarity and cohesion to the international community.
The prime minister commended the Somali National Armed Forces for maintaining security throughout the festivities and for staging what he described as a high-standard military parade during the celebrations.
He also expressed appreciation to artists, cultural performers and members of the public for their role in organizing and promoting events held across the country to mark the annual independence commemorations.
Barre urged Somalis to strengthen national unity and remain committed to defending the country, warning against political differences that could undermine state-building efforts, national development and social cohesion.
The ceremony concluded with certificates of recognition being presented to institutions and individuals who played a key role in organizing and implementing the Independence Week events and celebrations across Somalia.
