KAMPALA, Uganda — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Kampala on an official visit to attend the inauguration ceremony of Uganda’s re-elected President Yoweri Museveni, Somali officials said on Monday.
During the visit, Mohamud held talks with Museveni focused on strengthening bilateral relations between Somalia and Uganda, including cooperation on security, counterterrorism and broader strategic partnerships.
The two leaders also discussed the importance of regional cooperation to promote peace, economic integration and long-term security stability across East Africa, according to a statement from the Somali presidency.
Mohamud thanked Uganda’s government and people for what he described as their historic role in supporting Somalia’s peace and stabilization efforts, particularly through participation in African Union peacekeeping missions and state-building initiatives.
Uganda has been one of the largest troop contributors to the African Union mission in Somalia since 2007, deploying thousands of soldiers to help combat the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab and protect key government institutions.
The Somali president’s trip forms part of wider diplomatic efforts to strengthen regional partnerships and deepen cooperation between Somalia and East African nations.
