MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s federal government has reaffirmed that its official position on the Cyprus issue remains unchanged, stressing its respect for the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Somalia’s position is based on the United Nations Charter and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolutions 541 of 1983 and 550 of 1984.
The ministry said a personal statement recently circulated on social media did not represent Somalia’s official policy and should not be interpreted as a change in the country’s foreign policy.
It also clarified that the statement did not amount to recognition of any entity or administration in northern Cyprus.
“There has been no official decision to alter Somalia’s longstanding position on the Cyprus issue,” the ministry said.
Somalia reiterated its support for a peaceful settlement of the Cyprus dispute through dialogue and an agreement between the two sides, with the United Nations playing its role in mediation and in accordance with international law and relevant Security Council resolutions.
