MOGADISHU — Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Friday attended a ceremony marking the arrival of the modern oil drilling vessel Çağrı Bey, which is set to officially begin petroleum exploration operations in Somalia, officials said.

Speaking at the event held at the Port of Mogadishu, the Somali president described the vessel’s arrival as a “national step” toward economic growth, increased investment and new employment opportunities.

He stressed that the government would prioritize responsible management of natural resources for the benefit of the Somali people.

Mohamud said the federal government remained committed to transparent and equitable governance to ensure revenues from oil resources are converted into public services, economic development and long-term stability.

He also thanked the government of Turkey for its close cooperation, praising Ankara’s continued support for Somalia’s reconstruction and economic capacity-building.

The ceremony was attended by senior Somali officials, including the deputy speaker of parliament, the prime minister, the president of Galmudug state, cabinet ministers, and the governor of Banadir region.

Also present was Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, along with diplomats and other guests.
