MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s disaster management agency (SoDMA) and federal member state relief ministers held a farewell ceremony in Mogadishu for 25 officials who are heading to China for training on flood response.

The 25 officials from SoDMA and state relief ministries will receive training on flood preparedness, prevention, and emergency response systems.

The program focuses on flood risk reduction, early warning systems, and strengthening disaster response capacity under international cooperation initiatives.

SoDMA Chief Mohamud Moalim said the training is essential for improving Somalia’s resilience to climate-related disasters that continue to affect vulnerable communities across multiple regions.

“We urge you to show discipline, integrity, and patriotism during the training,” he said, “and to share your knowledge upon returning to Somalia.”

Somalia is expecting heavy autumn rains linked to El Niño, which are likely to increase the risk of flooding in several regions.

He said boosting early warning systems, coordination mechanisms, and emergency response capacity remains a national priority.

Somalia remains among the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, frequently experiencing extreme swings between prolonged droughts and destructive flash floods.
