MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s interior security minister, Gen. Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, met the United Nations Development Programme’s new representative in Somalia, Christophoros Politis to discuss strengthening cooperation on security and police services.

The meeting focused on expanding cooperation between the Somali government and UNDP, particularly efforts to improve security and policing services, accelerate funding for priority projects and develop sustainable solutions to challenges facing both sides.

Fartaag stressed the importance of strengthening international support for Somalia’s security institutions, saying greater cooperation was needed to improve public security services and build capable security institutions.

The minister said stronger institutions would help Somalia achieve lasting security and create conditions for greater stability and development for its citizens.

UNDP has supported Somalia in areas including institution-building, governance and security-sector development as the country works to strengthen its national security institutions and gradually assume greater responsibility for maintaining security.
