LAS ANOD, Somalia – At least six people, including children and a traditional elder named Amir Jama Mohamed Digale, have been killed in Somaliland army shelling on LasAnod city.

The SCC-Khatumo forces responded to the mortar bombing of Somaliland which led to sporadic fighting taking place in the east of the city, according to the residents.

The Somaliland forces stationed at a base in the eastern suburbs of Lasanod carried out an indiscriminate bombardment in the key city, which caused damage and deaths to civilians.

The crisis in Las Anod began as an escalating series of conflicts between the occupying Somaliland forces and local community fighters, who struggled to create a separate state.

Nearly one year into the conflict, more families continued to flee the fighting in the territory of Sool. Close to 900,000 people fled their houses, and some crossed into Ethiopia.

Somaliland’s army and Dhulbahante clan fighters are fighting for control of the town of Las Anod. The Dhulbahante want to join Somalia rather than remain in the breakaway state.
