ARUSHA, Tanzania – Somalia’s parliamentary delegation took part in the election of a new president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) during the organisation’s 153rd assembly in the Tanzanian city of Arusha.
The Somali delegation, comprising members of both houses of the Federal Parliament and led by Senator Samsam Dahir Mahmoud, participated in the vote alongside representatives of parliaments from around the world.
Milton Dick, speaker of Australia’s House of Representatives, won the election, defeating two other candidates: Sahiba Gafarova, speaker of Azerbaijan’s parliament, and Rojo Edwards Silva, a senator from Chile.
The Somali delegation’s participation highlighted the country’s engagement in the IPU’s activities and decision-making processes, as well as efforts to strengthen diplomatic relations and parliamentary cooperation internationally.
The IPU is a global organisation that brings together national parliaments to promote democracy, peace, dialogue and international cooperation. It also provides a platform for legislators to discuss shared challenges and coordinate responses to issues of common concern.
Somalia’s participation in the assembly comes as the country seeks to strengthen its engagement with international institutions and expand cooperation with parliamentary bodies worldwide.
